Hike 27 - Bush Lake Loop

I’ve lost track of how many weeks and days we’ve been mostly at home due to COVID-19. We’ve gone out for essentials such as groceries and have taken many walks around the neighborhood, but have mostly been trying to stay safe at home. However, now that the weather is a bit nicer, it’s hard not to want to get out of the house. We live in a first ring suburb of a major city so it sometimes takes some planning to figure out where to go to avoid the crowds. Honestly, this isn’t that different from pre-COVID life as we like to avoid groups of people, but it seems especially important now.

On this particular day, we didn’t want to drive too far, but wanted to find a place that wasn’t overrun with people who had the same idea to get outside and I think we succeeded. We like to head out early in the day and I think that seems to help with the crowds as well.

We’d walked an adjacent trail a year or so ago which we liked, but were frustrated with as we got lost. Since then I use my AllTrails app to make sure we are following the trail that we want to. It’s made a huge difference as some of these trails can be a little confusing (especially when there are a series of trails you can take).

This trail went partly through fields, around the lake, and through a neighborhood. We’d been looking to walk a little further as a lot of these hikes have been around the 2 mile mark so this 4 miler seemed like a good idea. I’d rather have a nature trail, but it was sort of nice to see a different neighborhood and admire the houses (we are looking to remodel so we are hyper alert to house designs).

While this might have felt a little long for Riley, she did fine and it was nice to find a trail that was close to home. I’ve said it before, but I’ll note it again… I love Minnesota for all the parks and trails that are maintained . It really makes a difference in our quality of life.

Hike 26 - Mission Trails Regional Park

I’m writing this while sequestered away at home due to the Coronavirus. We’re healthy… we’re fine, but we’ve been home for weeks and now it’s snowing. We’ve been out on A LOT of walks around the neighborhood, but haven’t been exploring trails (or really going anywhere) in awhile so it’s nice to revisit this time when we could go where ever we wanted and interact with other people. A couple years ago we hiked Torry Pine State Natural Reserve Park and were tempted to return as it was a great trail to explore, but we decided it was best to venture to someplace new.

Mission Trails Regional Park is set amongst the mountains so it feels mostly secluded, except for the bits where you can see the surrounding neighborhood. It doesn’t have any shade so be prepared with sunscreen and hats… and I’d suggest to go early as it gets hot fast, even in January.

It also has a vistor/nature center which we always appreciate so we can learn more about the area and animals, and have an indoor bathroom. Riley especially enjoyed the indoor activities for kids.

I would return so explore some of the other trails in this park (there are many - we took the visitor center loop), but knowing us, we’ll find another place to explore the next time we visit San Diego.

Hike 25 - Wood Lake Nature Center

On a relatively nice November day, we decided to find a local hike to take advantage of the weather since it was only bound to get colder and snowier. After a quick search we decided on Wood Lake Nature Center. While I always enjoy the solitude of a hike up north, you can’t beat a trail 10 minutes from home when you aren’t able to drive hours away. This was a mear ten minutes from our house and I had no idea it was there.

This park is right next to the highway so the humm of the cars did take away from the feeling that you were out in the middle of nowhere, but it’s still impressive to have this much space set aside in the middle of a bustling city. This is one of the many reasons I love Minnesota.

After our hike, we explored inside the nature center which was a nice bonus while out hiking and a good place to warm up if needed. It’s always hard to rate these trails especially when comparing our ratings to other trails. I means I rated this one a 4 while also giving Porcupine Falls a 4 and that just seems wrong. However, the ratings are based on different, non consistent factors so I’m not going to worry about it too much, and instead, I’ll just keep finding trails to enjoy.
